Reflection #1

In the article, “Sexist men have psychological problems” they provide studies that reveal that sexist man have certain types of behaviors like aggressiveness and violence. That leads to a negative impact on a man’s health especially in their mental health. This article relates to conflict since psychologist are worried because many men are ruining their own health and can keep progressing which also relates to one of the generalization (Conflict is progressive). In another article, “The men America Left behind” they interview some men that claim that masculinity always gets in the way of everything including solutions. This article can make a connection with conflict because masculinity is an obstacle for the problem of gender roles which relates to the progression of toxic masculinity. In the third article I read titled, “Toxic Masculinity is Killing us in many ways” the author described his observation about two men who showed signs of aggression and noticed that their behavior could have been caused due to norms they have in their culture. This means the conflict is considered as man-made due to the different norms ones society can have for both gender causing a major problem. In another article I read named, “Dance, Manhood, and Warfare amongst the Acholi people of Northern Uganda” the author makes connections with conflict is unintentional.  In this article the author describes a society where toxic masculinity is encouraged by its own members this shows the lack of knowledge they have on the topic which reveal that they don’t necessarily want to hurt men but they still do. In the fifth article I read titled, “How masculinity can hurt mental health” it talks about how different men expectations in various cultures or societies can hurt a man’s mind however in most some culture they won’t stop doing it because it's part of their culture. This leads to an ethical dilemma composed by opposing forces. In one of the most interesting articles I have read titled, “ ‘Tough Guys’ less likely to be honest with the doctor” an interesting observation showed that men don’t like to seem weak to the extreme point where they don’t like to tell their doctor if they are feeling pain. This article falls in the conflict is man-made because the man itself is keeping them from danger. This is very interesting because in America a man is more likely to die earlier than a women! (This may be caused because doctors have more information about a women health but not a man) Another article named, “Psychologist Say Macho Behavior May Help Explain a Man’s shorter lifespan” reassures that men have a shorter lifespan due to “manliness” that keeps them from complaining about any health problems but not just only to doctors but within their community or family. This article relates to conflict is man-made because the conflict can be solved but since men are the ones that are contributing its even harder. What I learned that is new is how men have shorter lifespans than women due to their dishonesty with the doctor and their health problems. Another new thing I learned was that culture has a great part in masculinity. Yes I had to change my driving question because we found the two sides of my conflict which are society and health professionals. For collaboration I don’t really see a lot of effort from a team member but me and the other team member are looking for more articles and worked on our driving question alone.

Reflection #2

I learned that toxic masculinity doesn’t only impact a man’s mental health but also their behavior. This did change my driving question because we are researching how toxic masculinity impacts a man’s mental health and their behavior. For my student-led research my group chose to do a survey because since we found many articles on what psychologist says about the topic we thought that we needed the opinion of the other side which is society. What has been easy is making a plan on how we are going to give our survey to people; the hardest part has been writing the questions for the survey. We need to work more efficiently on the information synthesis document to a very complex content. Our collaboration has been slightly unfair because in our group there is three people but one of them does not do there work on time or when we tell him/her to work with us on something and he/she never does it so he/she leaves it on us; however my other partner works very efficiently and keeps on motivating me to do my best.

Reflection #3

Since my last reflection I learned that some of the reasons that people encourage the masculinity norms because it helps them in the near future. I learned that it can be very hard because most of the time we can’t agree on something but we come up wit a solution which is part of the symposium theme this year. Our group wants to add some symbolism to the board such as the gears we used with the masculinity symbol which means the way a man think or how are they taught to think. For our supplemental piece we are planning to do something related to photography or painting. If we are doing a painting we would your color that represent the masculinity norms and health so we would have two sides. Somethings we need to do to complete our plan is we need to decide what will we have to paint or draw that uses a lot of symbolism. Our collaboration is kind of unfair but our partner that didn’t used to much is starting to do more like help with the drawing. However in the morning I saw the person doing the homework of another class and realized that she/he hasn’t done his part of the ISD. This did not make me happy I was really disappointed because that would mean he/she  doesn’t do anything at home.

Reflection #4

My driving question is how do the opposing perspectives on masculinity impact a man’s mental health and behavior. Some revisions we have made is in the art piece at first we wanted to do a man with two sides and people telling him to be a man and the other to say that speaking his mind or expressing himself as a weak person is not bad. However we thought that that did not have a lot of symbolism so we changed our mind decided to do a man and inside of him there will be newspaper. That will mean the different perspectives in society and that influences him. We learned that symbolism can be used in everything and still make sense.
